Description:
The task is to create a title sequence for the movie Nightcrawler by utilizing a focal point, a meaning, a visual cue, or a framing device. The challenge was to see if the title sequence could be approached from a wider or a narrower perspective. Understanding the film, it was required to decide on a focal point to tell a visual story. Integrating photographs and typography to create a visual treatment that is unique and appropriate to the goal.
The Main Title sequence for Nightcrawler explores the mind of the main character Lou. Bloom is an opportunist and ignores every moral, and ethical line possible in his process. He cares more about his shots than his own life, his “intern’s” life, his new equipment and car, or even the network that is addicted to his work. Just like how he manipulates the crime scenes, he sees everything in a different way to fulfill the shots he wants.
The main title acts as a prelude to the film, telling a narrative through the eyes of the character. Using the framing device of a kaleidoscope, the main title is a sequence of places throughout the city of Los Angeles showing how distorted or manipulating Bloom could see the world.
